  1. Serrated Knife
  2. Two-liter Soda Bottle 
  3. Marker 
  4. Cutting Board
  5. Vinegar
  6. A wire to hand the bottle
  7. Optional- Vinegar and Hole Punch 

Instructions To Follow Along- 


  • Make A Cutting Line On The Plastic Bottle

On the tapered neck of the plastic bottle- draw a line with a permanent marker to cut the bottle precisely with the help of a serrated knife.  

  • Cut The Top Of The Bottle 

Cut along the line on the bottle with the help of a sharp knife, and you can also use a pair of scissors, whatever you prefer, to cut the tapered neck of the plastic bottle. Use the cutting board to place it on the table to avoid any kind of damage. 

  • Assemble The FlyTrap

Get rid of the bottle cap, flip it and place it inside the base of the bottle, just like a funnel inside a cove. This will complete the setting of the trap. 

Note- If you are thinking about keeping the bottle cap, you will have to make a large hole to trap all the flies. Keeping the lid on is a good idea, as it further prevents the flies from finding their way back out. 

  • Place The Bait Inside The Trap

To place the bait inside the trap, remove the funnel and choose a lure that you think will tempt the flies the most. 

Meat and feces attract flies the most as they lay their eggs/larvae inside them. If you think of using meat as bait, do not keep it inside your house As it will produce a pungent smell. Flies are attracted to all the decaying fruits and vegetables. 

You can use a slightly over-ripe fruit or vegetable as bait; also, try adding some sugar and water if the temptation does not pick the flies. 

Fruit scented dish-soaps can also be used as bait. It is best to place the trap outside the house so that the flies do not come inside your home. Adding a splash of vinegar can also help in this process. 

  • Make A Handle 

If you want to hang the trap to a hook, you need something sharp to punch two holes in both trap layers. After making holes, thread a piece of wire long enough to go through the holes and be hung and tied anywhere. Do not forget to crimp the ends of the wire or thread. 

And your trap is ready to hang.

This way, you will minimize any sort of fly outbreak as this way you will prevent them from laying eggs by which they fuel their next cycle. 

You will have to empty the trap full of dead flies regularly and rebate the web. If you live near animal farms or have a farm of your own during the summer season You might have to take multiple fly traps to keep the flies out of your field. 

Also, be cautious while using meat as bait cause they might contain larvae in it, who will have to destroy the larvae first before cleaning your trap.
