The Islamic World Consumed Coffee For Centuries

Coffee Beans Didn’t Turn Into A Beverage For Years

A coffee plant was first found in mid-AD 800 in Ethiopia. People chewed these beans as berries. In the fifteenth century, traders from Yemen, on the other side of the sea, the thought of boiling the coffee beans to make something one can drink out of it. 

Arabic Origins Of Coffee

There is an Arabic “qahwa.” It is a kind of wine. The word coffee is named after the name of this wine. Linguists have given many theories regarding the association of this word with coffee. Most of them believe that since coffee has an intoxicating effect like wine, they are named similarly. However, the word “qahwa” is taken from “quwwa,” an Arabic word. It means energy or power. 

Another similar word is qaha, which implies a ‘lack of hunger.’ Coffee is, therefore, a substance that supplements the appetite and makes one feel intoxicated. The first export of coffee plants was from Ethiopia to Arabia. It is also sometimes believed that the word is from a kingdom present in medieval Ethiopia, Kaffa.
